How To Setup BandLab Midi With USB Midi Keyboard

BandLab is one of the few DAW available online that packs so much power yet the software is completely free. BandLab can host up to 16 tracks in a single project, record up to 15 minutes and collaborate with up to 50 users or bandmates. The layout of BandLab will not all make you feel that you are working on a 100% free DAW without purchasing any license or a subscription to this Digital Audio Workstation. The overall layout may give you a feel of the legendary Logic Pro X. Though, this one's not so powerful, it still packs a lot of power, effects, and plugins even after being a free DAW.

BandLab includes a lot of BandLab sounds which are free-to-use loops and instrumental sounds which can be integrated into user projects. These sounds include various Global sounds like the African folk instruments and also some of the best-sounding orchestral sounds which are just needed to be dragged and dropped into your project and you are good to go.

In this tutorial, we would know how to connect our USB Midi Keyboard with the BandLab Online DAW.

Step 1: Properly connect the USB Type-B cable to the USB Midi keyboard. Now, connect the USB Type Type-A cable to your laptop or Personal Computer.

Step 2: Install the BandLab software. In this case, we are using the BandLab Online DAW hence which can be easily accessed through any internet browser like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari, etc.

Step 3: Download the required Midi drivers into your system as without this the Midi won't get connected and the played notes won't get through the tracks in BandLab. For Example, if you are using a Yamaha Midi Keyboard, you would need to download and install the USB MIDI Driver V3.1.4 and set up your Midi Keyboard accordingly.

Step 4: Click on add track and select Virtual Instruments. Now, select your MIDI Device from the drop-down menu. After selecting the MIDI Device select the desired instrument from the plethora of virtual instruments like Basses, Strings, Horns, Pianos, etc.

Using this simple method, any MIDI USB Keyboard can be connected simply to the BandLab DAW.

Merits Of BandLab:

  • Easy to use User Interface and options can be located easily.
  • Professional effects like reverb, delays, compressors, and limiters are available.
  • Lyrics can be noted in the DAW itself and can be worked upon accordingly.
Demerits Of BandLab:
  • Only 16 simultaneous tracks can be recorded.
  • Only 15 minutes of recording can be done.

Overall, BandLab is still one of the greatest free DAW and will be more than enough to cater to all your basic programming, recording, mixing and mastering needs for sure.
